Health System Sheds Hospice Program, Closes Historic Inpatient Unit

Hospice Care of the Southwest and BSA Hospice in Amarillo, Texas, are merging to form BSA Hospice of the Southwest, according to press reports. Hospice Care of the Southwest will run the program while the health system hospice will remain a partner, a rep told the Amarillo Globe-News.

BSA closed its inpatient hospice facility as well, which had been the fifth such freestanding facility in the country when it opened in 1985. “The whole reasoning behind this is that the hospice industry has become so heavily regulated, and it really is a specialty,” BSA Hospice of the Southwest director of professional services Hellen Miller told the newspaper.

BSA responded to similar pressures in home care by spinning off its home care program in February and merging it with Compassion Home Care in Amarillo, the Globe-News adds.
