Wondering exactly what you’re looking at in the HIPAA Eligibility Transaction System (HETS)? Medicare wants to help.

HETS “returns the start date of the hospice period,” the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services explains in a message to providers. “This start date is the date of the current Notice of Election (NOE).”

Clarification: “For purposes of claims processing, the Common Working File (CWF) displays both the election period and the benefit period,” CMS continues. “Since HETS is only used for eligibility, it combines them into one continuous hospice period.”
