ICD-10-CM Coding:

Look Forward to New Codes for Baked Milk/Egg Tolerance

Question: A physician documented that a patient is allergic to milk and eggs in their raw form but can tolerate them when cooked or baked. How do I code this?

Answer: Right now, you can use the codes Z91.011 (Allergy to milk products) and Z91.012 (Allergy to eggs) to document a person’s allergy to these foods. Obviously, these aren’t quite specific enough to convey the full context of the patient’s situation. At the start of October, you’d be able to document these conditions with greater specificity.

Beginning Oct. 1, 2025, you can use codes Z91.0111 (Allergy to milk products with tolerance to baked milk) and Z91.0120 (Allergy to eggs, unspecified).

Note that there are other new codes for documenting allergies to milk and eggs:

  • Z91.0110 (Allergy to milk products, unspecified)
  • Z91.0112 (Allergy to milk products with reactivity to baked milk)
  • Z91.0120 (Allergy to eggs, unspecified)
  • Z91.0121 (Allergy to eggs with tolerance to baked egg).
