Question: Our provider documented a submental wound in a patient record. I can’t find a diagnosis for this. How should I report it?

Answer: The submental area, or submental triangle, is an area of the neck that is just below the chin.

Coding the condition would depending on the nature of the wound. The ICD-10 alphabetic index for abrasion – submental directs you to S00.81X- (Abrasion of other part of head), while the index for laceration – head – specified site NEC directs you to S01.81X- (Laceration without foreign body of other part of head).
