ICD-9 2011:

V49.8x, V13.2x Expand Status, History Options

This fall indicate a do not resuscitate order using new V code.

Struggling to find a V code to use for DNR or dysplasia check up code? ICD-9 2011 ends the hunt.

Use V49.8x for DNR, Physical Restraints

Two new codes capture 'status' of a patient. The new diagnoses may be important to physicians who see patients in an inpatient or nursing home setting, notes Jennifer Swindle, RHIT, CCS-P, CEMC, CFPC, CCP-P, PCS, Director Coding & Compliance Division, PivotHealth, LLC.

The new codes include:

V49.86 " Do not resuscitate status

    V49.87 " Physical restrains status.

Support Dysplasia Check-up With V13.2x

Every four to six months following treatment, your physician may see patients who have had vaginal or vulvar dysplasia to verify that there has been no recurrence. This history may be the sole reason for the encounter, and currently you have no way to reflect this. Also, "personal history codes are nice to support testing," notes Jan Rasmussen, PCS, CPC, ACSOB, ACS-GI, owner and consultant of Professional Coding Solutions in Holcombe, Wis.

Starting this October, you will have new codes for personal history of vaginal and vulvar dysplasia:

V13.23 " Personal history of vaginal dysplasia

V13.24 " Personal history of vulvar dysplasia.
