Reader Question:

Choose V13.3 for Atypical Nevus Diagnosis

Question: I can’t seem to find a clear diagnosis code for personal history of atypical nevus. What am I missing?

Answer: An atypical nevus is not malignant, so you won’t find a specific V code in ICD-9, as would be the case in a personal history of malignant neoplasm (V10.xx).

To report a personal history of the condition, V13.3 (Personal history of other diseases; Diseases of skin and subcutaneous tissue) could be a viable possibility. Or if that doesn’t seem appropriate, consider V13.89 (Personal history of other specified diseases) and include documentation explaining the situation.
