NURSES OVERESTIMATE RISK OF PAIN-KILLER ADDICTION

Nurses are good at assessing their patients' pain, but they still have an exaggerated fear that narcotics will cause addiction in their patients.

That was the finding of a major study that appears in this month's issue of Nursing2002. Based on a survey of more than 3,200 nurses, the research examines whether nurses' knowledge and attitude about pain control has advanced in recent years. Pain management experts have said that concerns about addiction should not play a role in treating intractable cancer pain.
