NURSING PRACTICE:

Ready, Set--Update Your Nursing Procedures

Mini-QI projects can create major gains.

You want to perform nursing procedures "by the book." But the problem is that nursing textbook on your shelf can't keep pace with new research that can improve your patient outcomes.

Solution: Choose various nursing procedures to research as a team, such as how to give different types of injections, suggests Catherine Tantau, RN, a consultant in Chicago Park, CA.

It's your license at stake: Nurses should definitely participate in dialogues about how to perform nursing procedures and know the medical best practices for conditions treated in their settings, says Tantau. "Nurses practice under their own license and should know the acceptable parameters for care," she cautions.
