A new campaign claims that a highly touted new mattress and treatment system appears to be appealing to residents and liability insurers alike. Because of its beneficial effect on pressure sores, the use of a specially designed mattress, coupled with a treatment program of special salves and ointments, can reduce the cost of nursing home liability insurance, according to Bentley Lipscomb, director of the Florida AARP, the St. Petersburg Times reports. AARP is not receiving any financial gain from its advocacy of the program, according to Lipscomb. A pilot program at Marriott facilities and Delta nursing homes found that the system dramatically reduced the number of bedsores, according to Tempur-Med, manufacturer of the mattresses. Two insurance companies, Marsh USA and Provider Alliance, will discount policies for nursing homes that use the system.
