Coding Quizzer:

Know The Definition Of Abnormal Labs At P9

How would you code this example?

Mrs. J is receiving Coumadin for DVT. She has elevated prothrombin times within the desired therapeutic range. How would you code P9 (any abnormal lab values during the last 90 days or since admission)?

Instructions: Enter "0" for no if there are no abnormal lab values in the resident's record and "1" for yes  if the resident has had at least one abnormal lab value.

Coding Quizzer Answer

Answer: Code "1" for yes. An elevated prothrombin time for a resident on Coumadin therapy is coded as abnormal even though this may be the desired effect, states the RAI user's manual (p. 3-206).
