CMS Announces Free Infection Preventionist Training

The 19-hour course is nonregulatory but covers matters crucial to RoP Phase III.

Although facilities have had to incorporate an infection prevention and control program (IPCP) into their protocols officially since Nov. 28, 2016, the last part of the infection training — choosing an infection preventionist, the individual who is designated responsible for the facility’s IPCP — is required beginning this November.

CMS together with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has designed a 19-hour, 23-module course that hits at the core of preventing and controlling infections in nursing facility environments and provides useful tools for implementation. The modules can be taken in any order and at any time. Individuals who want the course to count for continuing education credits and a certificate of completion need to register beforehand and complete all modules, as well as pass an exam upon completion.
