Code ‘Edentulous’ If Resident Has This Condition

Question: One of our residents has dental implants in place of all of her natural teeth. Do I code this edentulous?

Answer: Yes, according to the Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) Manual, a resident who lacks natural teeth would be considered edentulous. Make sure you note in the care area assessment (CAA) that the resident has implants instead of natural teeth and note the various care areas that staff should keep an eye on.
