Question: What’s the most appropriate diagnosis code for a resident who ends up in a facility after an injury like a fracture? Should I be using aftercare codes, in the Z category? Ohio Subscriber Answer: Per ICD-10-CM guidance, aftercare codes cannot be used for fractures or other acute injuries. Instead, coders are instructed by the official guidance to use the 7th character to demonstrate the provision of subsequent care after an injury.
