Keep These Reference Books and Resources On Hand

Question: I’m putting together a little in-house library for coders, billers, and our internal auditor. What references would be good to include?

Virginia Subscriber

Answer: Coders, billers, and auditors rely on a lot of general and specific knowledge. Of course, up-to-date coding books for ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and CPT® are crucial for selecting and checking accurate codes. A subscription to a service like Codify is helpful for easy accessibility to codes, indexes, and other pertinent information.

Other resources that are good to have on hand are a medical dictionary, resources on anatomy, and even textbooks like a guide to physical examination and history taking, said Pam Warren, MHA, COC, CPC, during her presentation “Tools for Auditing” at AAPC’s AUDITCON 2025. Don’t forget that some consultants and other coding experts sometimes offer free content on the internet or in interviews — just make sure you’re double-checking the information you find on the internet for accuracy.
