HIPAA:

HIPAA STANDARD DATEBOOK

Your Heads-Up On Upcoming HIPAA Requirements Mark your calendars: The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has given health care providers a hint about when they can expect agency rulemaking on some of the less-known provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. According to the Department of Health and Human Services' Semiannual Regulatory Agenda, HIPAA-related regs in store for the coming months include:
a final standard for unique health care provider identifiers (expected in July);
a final standard for unique national health plan identifiers (slated for August);
a proposed electronic standard for claims attachments (planned for January 2004);
a proposed rule on electronic Medicare claims submission (expected in July). Lesson Learned: Keep in mind that your next big HIPAA compliance deadline is most likely Oct. 16, 2003, when the electronic transactions standards go into effect for most organizations.
