NPI:

CMS Stresses NPI-Only Date

Agency will hold 2 Q&A roundtables in May Medicare is now receiving more than 98 percent of claims with a National Provider Identifier, CMS says in a message to providers. But providers need to focus on the next step -- NPI-only claims, which CMS will require on May 23. CMS will host a national NPI roundtable on May 14 and a national NPI roundtable Q&A session on May 19. On its NPI Web site, CMS says that the May 23 deadline brings two requirements related to HIPAA Standard Transactions: • For all primary and secondary provider fields, only the NPI will be accepted and sent on all HIPAA electronic transactions (837I, 837P, NCPDP, DDE, 276/277, 270/271 and 835), paper claims (UB-04 and CMS-1500), and SPR advice. • The reporting of Medicare legacy identifiers in any primary or secondary provider fields will result in the rejection of the transaction. After providers test small batches of NPI-only claims and make sure those process smoothly, they should test other HIPAA transactions, the agency says. Remember that providers must be able to accept NPI-only remittance advice transactions. More NPI information is at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/NationalProvIdentStand, and providers can apply for an NPI at https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov.
