Reader Question:

Add a Modifier to Resident Charges in a Clinic

Question: Does modifier GC need to be added to all of the charges (such as E/M, biopsy, collection fee, surgical tray) the resident performs in a clinic with a teaching physician?

Nebraska Subscriber

Answer: Yes, for any charges that you submit under the teaching physician that includes documentation by the resident, you should attach modifier GC (This service has been performed in part by a resident under the direction of a teaching physician). This allows for the review of the documentation to be per the teaching guidelines. Your physician must comply with the requirements in chapter 12 of the Medicare Claims Processing Manual in order to be paid for physician services.
