Neurology & Pain Management Coding Alert

Reader Question:

95900/51785 for Sphincter and Pudendal EMG

Question: What are the correct CPT codes for pudendal nerve terminal distal latency studies and anal sphincter electromyography (EMG)? Missouri Subscriber Answer: For pudendal latency studies, the appropriate code is 95900 (Nerve conduction, amplitude and latency/velocity study, each nerve; motor, without F-wave study). Report needle EMG of anal or urethral sphincter using 51785 (Needle electromyography studies [EMG] of anal or urethral sphincter, any technique). The physician may supply such services personally or under his or her direct supervision. The test includes both technical and professional components. Therefore, if the physician only interprets results or does not otherwise bear the expense of equipment, supplies, staff, etc., he or she must append modifier -26 (Professional component) to the appropriate CPT code(s).
