Neurology & Pain Management Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Billing for EMGs

Question: If a neurologist performs an electromyography (EMG), can he or she bill twiceonce for the test and once for the interpretation? For example, 95860/95860-26?

Anonymous Iowa Subscriber

Answer: No, it would not be correct to bill this way. CPT code 95860 (needle electromyography, one extremity with or without related paraspinal areas), as well as other related needle electromyography codes, describes both the test itself and the neurologists interpretation of the results.
