Reader Question:

E/M Is Appropriate With Neuromuscular Testing

Question: May I report an E/M service along with 95831 for neuromuscular testing?

Ohio Subscriber Answer: Yes, if you perform a separate and distinct E/M service in addition to muscle testing, you may report the E/M service in addition to 95831 (Muscle testing, manual [separate procedure] with report; extremity [including hand] or trunk) (or any muscle testing codes in the 95831-95834 range).

Be sure to append modifier -25 (Significant, separately identifiable evaluation and management service by the same physician on the same day of the procedure or other service) to the appropriate E/M code (such as 99212, Office or other outpatient visit for the evaluation and management of an established patient ...) to gain reimbursement for the E/M service. And, you should independently document the E/M service to show its distinct and separately reportable nature.
