Neurology & Pain Management Coding Alert

Reader Question:

ICD-9 Changes for 2000

Question: Will neurologists have any ICD-9 changes for the year 2000?

Aventura Neurologic
Aventura, Fla.

Answer: According to the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), the agency will not release an updated version of the ICD-9 codes for the year 2000 because of Y2K computer compliance issues. HCFA officials were concerned that if system changes had been made to capture additions, deletions and modifications to ICD-9 for 2000, the functioning of the Medicare computer systems would be endangered and Medicares ability to process hospital bills would be compromised. Therefore, the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) published in the July 22, 1999, Federal Register does not contain an addendum modifying ICD-9 for 2000. The ICD-9 codes effective Oct. 1, 1998, will remain in effect through Sept. 30, 2000.
