Reader Question:

The 'Global Fee' Applies for In-Office EEGs

Question: We have a small four-physician office and would like to perform EEGs in the office. How should we bill for the EEGs? Should we pay the technicians a flat fee and have the physicians read the results? Pennsylvania Subscriber Answer: You should report the appropriate electro-encephelogram (EEG) code (95812-95830) with no modifiers appended. Your office will receive payment for both the technical and professional components of the service. Assuming that the technician performing the tests is employed by your office, you simply pay the technician's salary, with no need for a special billing arrangement. If you contract a technician to supply services for you, you may still report the global fee for any services he provides, but you must work out a separate agreement with the technician for his services.
