Reader Question:

Workers Compensation Report

Question: Our neurology office performs many workers compensation evaluations. I was recently told that we can bill for transcription costs for these reports by using 99199 per page, in addition to billing 99080 for filling out the form. Is this correct?

Nebraska Subscriber

Answer: Workers compensation regulations vary by state and are not dictated by HCFA, but normally, this extra billing is not allowable. The transcription costs are usually part of writing the report payable with 99080 (special reports such as insurance forms) and are not separately payable by using 99199 (unlisted special service, procedure or report) or any other code.
