Reader Questions:

95951 Versus 95956 Hinges on Video

Question:What is the difference between the two EEG codes 95951 and 95956? Texas Subscriber Answer:The difference lies in whether the provider uses video recording during the diagnostic study. Code 95951 (Monitoring for localization of cerebral seizure focus by cable or radio,16 or more channel telemetry, combined electroencephalographic [EEG] and video recording and interpretation [e.g., for presurgical localization]. Each 24 hours) combines the EEG, video recording, and interpretation. Code 95956 (Monitoring for localization of cerebral seizure focus by cable or radio, 16 or more channel telemetry, electroencephalographic [EEG] recording and interpretation, each 24 hours), by contrast, includes only the EEG and interpretation, not video. Note that both codes are time based and you would report one unit of service for each 24 hour period of testing.
