READER QUESTIONS :

EMG Needle Charge

Question: What is the correct code for disposable sterile needles used for electromyography (EMG)? Idaho Subscriber Answer: Many payers consider the supplies necessary to complete neuromuscular electrodiagnostic studies not separately reimbursable as they are included in the practice expense component of the established relative value units (RVU) for the CPT code. Depending upon your payer contractual agreements, look at either the HCPCS code A4215 (Needle, sterile, any size, each) or the general CPT supply code 99070 (Supplies and materials [except spectacles], provided by the physician over and above those usually included with the office visit or other services rendered [list drugs, trays, supplies, or materials provided]) for those payers that will consider separate reimbursement for the needles.
