READER QUESTIONS:

Include Monofilament Testing in E/M

Question: What is the appropriate code to describe monofilament peripheral neuropathy testing?

Michigan Subscriber
Answer: CPT does not contain a specific code to describe monofilament peripheral neuropathy testing. But you should not turn to an unlisted-procedure code, such as 95999 (Unlisted neurological or neuromuscular diagnostic procedure) to describe the service. Rather, you should include monofilament testing for peripheral neuropathy as part of any E/M service the neurologist provides.
