Reader Questions:

Look to 20550 for Iliotibial Injection

Question: Our physician administered an iliotibial injection with steroids. How should we code the procedure?Wisconsin SubscriberAnswer: Consider reporting CPT 20550 (Injection[s]; single tendon sheath, or ligament, aponeurosis [e.g., plantar "fascia"]) for the injection. The iliotibial (IT) band is a long band of fibrous tissue that runs along the outer thigh and provides stability to the outside of the knee joint during movement. Iliotibial band syndrome (728.89, Other disorders of muscles, ligament and fascia) is a common disorder that occurs as the IT band repeatedly rubs over the lateral femoral condyle. It is seen in activities with repetitive flexion and extension of the knee, such as running.
