Reporting Tilt Table Function Tests

Question: After our physician made several attempts to evaluate the autonomic function of a patient with Guillain-Barre syndrome, she decided to perform autonomic function testing. Using a tilt table, the physician tested the patient’s parasympathetic and adrenergic functions.  How should I code this encounter?

Answer: Based on your description, the best coding course would be to report 95924 (Testing of autonomic nervous system function; combined parasympathetic and sympathetic adrenergic function testing with at least 5 minutes of passive tilt) for the entire encounter.

Be sure to append G61.0 (Guillain-Barre syndrome) to 95924 to prove medical necessity for the encounter.

Also: CPT® forbids you from reporting these two codes with 95924:

  • 95921, … cardiovagal innervation (parasympathetic function), including 2 or more of the following: heart rate response to deep breathing with recorded R-R interval, Valsalva ratio, and 30:15 ratio
  • 95922, … vasomotor adrenergic innervation (sympathetic adrenergic function), including beat-to-beat blood pressure and R-R interval changes during Valsalva maneuver and at least 5 minutes of passive tilt.
