Brush Up on Laminectomy Basics

The lamina is the posterior arch of the vertebral bone. The lamina lies between the spinous process and the more lateral facets, pedicles and transverse processes of each vertebra. The spinous process is a bony prominence in the posterior midline of the vertebral body.

Complete laminectomy is a surgical removal of the lamina bilaterally, as well as the spinous process and attached connective tissues and ligaments. The overlying muscles are divided to reach these structures.
