Neurosurgery Coding Alert

Correction:

Time-Based Consults

The September 2001 Neurosurgery Coding Alert incorrectly reported that if a physician spends at least 41 minutes of an 85-minute consult in face-to-face counseling and coordination of care, the visit would qualify as a level-four (99254) inpatient consult ("Billing a Time-Based Consult," pp. 71-72). In fact, at least 43 minutes of an 85-minute consult would have to be spent in face-to-face counseling and coordination of care to qualify as a 99254. Neurosurgery Coding Alert regrets the error.
