Neurosurgery Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Bone Grafts

Question: If a neurosurgeon uses a femoral ring allograft and an iliac bone graft, should both be coded?

Florida Subscriber

Answer: The neurosurgeon may code using both graft codes 20930 (allograft for spine surgery only; morselized) and 20937 ( morselized [through separate skin or fascial incision]); however, do not expect additional reimbursement because there are no RVUs (relative value units) associated with 20930. Some commercial insurance carriers may reimburse for both, and it is correct to code for both if both types of grafts are used.
