Reader Question:

Coding for VectorVision

Question: Which code should I use for a VectorVision during a craniotomy?

Answer: The correct code for VectorVision (a navigational instrument similar to an immune serum globulin [ISG] wand) is +61795 (stereotactic computer-assisted volumetric [navigational] procedure, intracranial, extracranial, or spinal). This is an add-on code and, according to the Coders Desk Reference, should be reported in addition to the procedure code when the physician uses a computer to assist with coordinate determination established with a CT or MRI scan. Add-on codes should be paid at their full value and are not subject to multiple-procedure reductions.

Version 6.3 of the national Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) erroneously bundled +61795 to intracranial, extracranial and spinal procedures and unbundled it from the stereotactic procedures that include it. The error has  been corrected, and any carrier that does not properly reimburse +61795 should be referred to the latest version (7.2) of CCI.

Note: The CCI is available by subscription from the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) in print or as a CD-ROM in searchable (.pdf) format. Contact NTIS for more information, www.ntis.gov/products/hcfa.htm or 1-800-363-2068.
