Reader Question:

Complicated Headache Means These ICD-10 Codes

Question: What is complicated headache syndrome? How do I choose an ICD-10 code for the condition?

Answer: According to Codify by AAPC, complicated headache syndrome “refers to very rare headache disorders that are severe and/ or persistent, difficult to diagnose and/or treat, and are often complicated by overlying or underlying symptoms.” The ICD-10 codes for these syndromes begin at G44.5- (Complicated headache syndromes), but the codes go deeper than that.

Under G44.5-, ICD-10 lists the following options for further specificity:

  • G44.51 (Hemicrania continua)
  • G44.52 (New daily persistent headache (NDPH))
  • G44.53 (Primary thunderclap headache)

Last resort: If you cannot peg your patient’s headache syndrome to one of the aforementioned codes, choose G44.59 (Other complicated headache syndrome) instead.
