Reader Question:

Credentialing Counts

Question: Our new associate started with us a few months ago, but we did not get him credentialed with many of the plans in time. Can we simply bill under someone elses name until he is on the plans?

Alaska Subscriber

Answer: Unfortunately, you cannot bill under someone elses name, because of liabilities involving malpractice insurance, documentation and patient confusion. At best, in your case you may be able to convince the plan medical director to expedite the credentialing process. In the meantime, familiarize your new surgeon with your documentation procedures so he can be prepared when the time comes to see patients.
