Reader Question:

Remember Add-On for Ventricular Catheter

Question: Encounter notes indicate that the surgeon created subdural twist drill holes in order to implant an intracerebral monitoring device. During the encounter, they also placed an intracranial ventricular catheter with neuroendoscopic assistance. How should I report this scenario?

Answer: You’ll report a pair of codes for this encounter. On the claim, report:

  • 61107 (Twist drill hole(s) for subdural, intracerebral, or ventricular puncture; for implanting ventricular catheter, pressure recording device, or other intracerebral monitoring device) for the creation of the twist drill holes
  • +62160 (Neuroendoscopy, intracranial, for placement or replacement of ventricular catheter and attachment to shunt system or external drainage (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure)) for the catheter placement.
