Spinal Area Matters on Schmorl’s Nodes Dx

Question: What are Schmorl’s nodes, and how do I choose a diagnosis code for the condition?

Iowa Subscriber

Answer: According to the National Institutes for Health (NIH), “a Schmorl’s node (SN) is the herniation of nucleus pulposus (NP) through the cartilaginous and bony end plate into the body of the adjacent vertebra. SNs are common findings on imaging, and although most SNs are asymptomatic, some have been shown to become painful lesions.”

You’ll report SN with one of the following diagnosis codes, depending on encounter specifics:

  • M51.44 (Schmorl’s nodes, thoracic region)
  • M51.45 (Schmorl’s nodes, thoracolumbar region)
  • M51.46 (Schmorl’s nodes, lumbar region)
  • M51.47 (Schmorl’s nodes, lumbosacral region).
