COUNTING OASIS DAYS MAY BE CONFUSING

First ask why you're counting.

Question: When counting days for OASIS required time points, the start of care date is counted as:

A) Day 0
B) Day 1
C) Sometimes 0, sometimes 1

Answer: C) Sometimes 0, sometimes 1.

In an answer to a question from the OASIS Certificate and Competency Board, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services says the SOC date is counted as Day 0 when calculating the days you have to complete the comprehensive OASIS assessment, whether initial, transfer, discharge or death date. But when you need to calculate a 60-day episode, the SOC day is Day 1.
