Reader Question:

Does Tunneling Make the Difference with PICCs?

Question: Are tunneled PICCs considered a surgical wound?

Answer: Peripherally inserted central catheters, both non-tunneled and tunneled, are excluded as surgical wounds when answering M1340, CMS says in the July 2012 Quarterly OASIS Q&As. But the wound could be reported in M1350 -- Skin Lesion or Open Wound, if the site is receiving agency intervention.
