Reader Question:

Don't Confuse Rules For Injections And Infusions

Question: Our patient is getting cortisone injections at a doctor's office. When answering M0800 on the OASIS assessment, do we respond N/A (No injectable meds prescribed) or  "2" (Unable to take injectable medications unless administered by someone else)?

Answer: If you have the cortisone injection on your medication profile (including dosage, frequency and route of administration) it is a prescribed injectable medication, says clinical consultant Judy Adams with Charlotte, NC-based LarsonAllen. M0800 currently does not require that the patient receive the prescribed medication at home, Adams says. So answer M0800 based on your evaluation of the patient's ability to prepare and administer the injection, she tells Eli. Under the current case mix system, any score on M0800 other than N/A receives points, she adds.
