Reader Question:

'ONLY' MAY NOT MEAN WHAT YOU THINK IN M0810

Question: Is a continuous positive airway pressure machine (C-PAP) one of the equipment items we are supposed to evaluate in M0810 (Patient Management of Equipment)? The question specifically states to include ONLY oxygen, IV/infusion therapy, enteral/parenteral nutrition equipment or supplies. But my colleague insists a C-PAP is to be included also.

Answer: At first glance, it does not look like a C-PAP would be included, but the 3M National OASIS Integrity Project instructs clinicians to include C-PAPs in M0810, says Cheryl Pacella with the Visiting Nurses Association of Boston. In the assessment strategies included for M0810 in Chapter 8 of the OASIS Implementation Manual, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services instructs the clinician to refer back to responses to M0250 and M0500 in answering M0810. Because M0500 specifically includes C-PAPs as one of the applicable respiratory treatments, experts conclude C-PAPs also should be included in M0810.

Caution: Bi-level positive airway pressure machines (Bi-PAPs) are NOT included in M0500 according to a recent CMS question and answer, Pacella reminds clinicians, and would not be included in M0810.
