OASIS Alert

Reader Question:

Take A Closer Look At M0210.

Did you know? Codes required in M0240 may be optional in M0210.

Scenario: We are doing a resumption of care OASIS assessment on a patient who has been in the hospital. This patient has a Stage II pressure ulcer on his heel. I think I'm supposed to code for this in M0230/M0240 using first 707.07 (Chronic ulcer of skin, heel) followed by 707.22 (Pressure ulcer, stage II).

Question: How should I use those diagnoses in M0210 (List patient's medical diagnosis and ICD-9-CM code categories for conditions requiring a medical or treatment regimen change within the past 14 days)? I have three other diagnoses that require changed medical treatment regimens. There are four lines for these in M0210. Do I need to list both of the pressure ulcer codes from M0230/M0240 in M0210?

Answer: Present coding guidelines do not stipulate that you need to use ICD-9-CM code 707.22 in M0210, says consultant Marianne Rone with Healthcare Provider Solutions in Nashville, TN. You are correct that you need to put 707.22 in M0240 to identify the stage of the ulcer being treated, she adds.
