Clotting Factor Update:

J7180 and J7183 Bring New Options for Corifact and Wilate

Say so long to J7184 and Q2041.

Double check the 2012 HCPCS codes before you report hemophilia clotting factors provided Jan. 1, 2012, or later.

Corifact: HCPCS 2012 adds J7180 (Injection, factor XIII [antihemophilic factor, human], 1 I.U.). The request for the new code was made with Corifact in mind, according to the May 17, 2011, HCPCS Public Meeting Agenda (www.cms.gov/MedHCPCSGenInfo/downloads/Tues_May17thDrug-Agenda.pdf).

In patients with congenital factor XIII deficiency, Corifact "is used to replace the missing Factor XIII and raise Factor XIII levels."

Wilate: HCPCS 2012 also supplies a new code for Wilate, says Janae Ballard, CPC, CPC-H, CPMA, CEMC, PCS, FCS, coding manager for The Coding Source. The new code is J7183 (Injection, von Willebrand factor complex [human], Wilate, 1 I.U. vWF: RCo).

The creation of J7183 completes a series of Wilate changes over the last year which saw J7184 (Injection, von Willebrand factor complex [human], Wilate, per 100 I.U. vWF: RCo) deleted and replaced with Q2041 (Injection, von Willebrand factor complex [human], Wilate, 1 I.U. vWF: RCo) in July 2011.

In 2012, both J7184 and Q2041 are defunct codes that will cause denials. You should use only J7183.
