Question: What is the diagnosis code for neurendocrine carcinoma? We could find no specific reference in the ICD-9 manual. Previously we used 194.9 (Malignant neoplasm of other endocrine glands and related structures; endocrine gland) and our payer rejected the claim.

Answer: How you code neuroendocrine depends on whether your oncologist knows where in the body the disease originated. Because most oncologists don't know the disease's primary source, you should use 199.1 (Malignant neoplasm without specification of site; other).
