Oncology & Hematology Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Use 77427 for IMRT Professional Services

Question: How should we report the professional component of an IMRT?

Georgia Subscriber Answer: To code the professional component of IMRT (intensity modulated radiation therapy), you should use 77427 (Radiation treatment management, five treatments). Radiation oncologists report this code to represent management for all types of external beam treatments.

When you submit claims for only the technical portion of IMRT, use 77418 (Intensity modulated treatment delivery, single or multiple fields/arcs, via narrow spatially and temporally modulated beams [e.g., binary, dynamic MLC], per treatment session). If you want to report both professional and technical components, assign 77301 (Intensity modulated radiotherapy plan, including dose-volume histograms for target and critical structure partial tolerance specifications).
