READER QUESTIONS:

Stand Up for Freestanding Tech Fees

Question: What is the proper place-of-service code for a freestanding center?

Texas Subscriber
Answer: You should check with your payer and your legal counsel to determine the proper code for your particular facility, but the most common codes are the following:

- 11--Office

- 21--Inpatient hospital

- 22--Outpatient hospital

- 49--Independent clinic

- 99--Freestanding radiation therapy center. Contact your payer to ensure reimbursement for technical services. You may need to educate payers accustomed to only reimbursing physicians for the professional component of a code.
