Take One Last Look to Be Sure Your NPI Ducks Are in a Row

See whether your software vendor is as on the ball as you are You may be numb to NPI news after months of reminders, but with the deadline approaching, you have to make sure you-ve got everything covered.

Here's a quick list of Do's and Don-ts that can help make your transition easier.

Do:

- Get a timeline from your billing software vendor that indicates when your system will begin using the updated CMS-1500 form.

- Expect a ramp-up period to allow for the new CMS-1500 forms to work properly with your software.

- Verify that you have National Provider Identifier (NPI) numbers for your practice as well as for each physician and practitioner in the group. Don-t:

- Wait too long to start changing your billing software. April 2, 2007, is the deadline, and it's just around the corner.

- Forget to visit the NPPES Web site for all the details about getting your practice an NPI number. Go to https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/NPPES/Welcome.do.
