A Reader Question in Ophthalmology Coding Alert Vol. 12, No. 3 (“Eye Exam vs. Consultation Coding”) incorrectly stated, “There is no specific ICD-9 code for diabetic macular edema.” In fact, there is one: 362.07 (Diabetic macular edema). ICD-9 notes that this code must be used with a code for diabetic retinopathy (362.01-362.06) Example: Date: ___________ Requesting Physician: John Smith, MD Reason for Consultation: Evaluation of continued blurred vision following treatment for the removal of a foreign body and recommendations for further care.
