Ophthalmology and Optometry Coding Alert

Correction:

Contact Lens for Keratoconus

In the November issue of Ophthalmology Coding Alert, in response to a question about how to code for fitting and prescribing a contact lens to treat keratoconus, we stated that 92310 (prescription of optical and physical characteristics of and fitting of contact lens, with medical supervision of adaptation; corneal lens, both eyes, except for aphakia) is the correct code. Although 92310 is the correct code for contact lens prescribing, it is not the correct code when the lens is prescribed to treat keratoconus, a bulging in which the cornea becomes shaped like a cone. The correct code is 92070 (fitting of contact lens for treatment of disease, including supply of lens). We regret any confusion this error may have caused.
