AAO Challenges BCBS SCODI Policy

The American Academy of Ophthalmology has finally confronted Blue Cross and Blue Shield for its frequent claim denials that categorize scanning computerized ophthalmic diagnostic imaging (SCODI) as "experimental" and the results of that confrontation hold big implications for ophthalmology coders. The pressure applied by the AAO resulted in coverage for SCODI, CPT code 92135 (Scanning computerized ophthalmic diagnostic imaging [e.g., scanning laser] with interpretation and report, unilateral), in 13 states: Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York (Empire), Oregon and West Virginia, according to the AAO April Washington Report.
