News Alert:

HCFA Rejects Modifier -60

Modifier -60 (altered surgical field), a new surgical modifier in CPT 2001, will not be recognized by HCFA. The agency is afraid that modifier -60 will be used routinely when additional work has already been included in the code. Physicians should use modifier -22 (unusual procedural services) instead, until further notice. HCFA made the announcement in Program Memorandum B-00-75. To view the full memorandum, go to www.hcfa.gov/pubforms/transmit/B0075.pdf.
